First impression?
Before you walk into The Black Cat, you’ll notice the Historic-Cultural Monument plaque at the entrance, which notes that it was the site of the first documented LGBT demonstration in the nation in 1937. Inside, you’ll find an inviting space that resembles some of the country’s best old world bars—think rich woods, tufted banquettes, ornate high ceilings with crown molding, and a deep mahogany bar that stretches to seat 20.
Cool. So who’s there? It’s a hyper-loyal crowd of regulars mixed with destination drinkers coming for a round or two on the Silverlake circuit.
How are the drinks? The menu caters to every type of drinker, from the cocktail buff to the whiskey geek to the basic beer lover. And be sure to keep an eye out for their rotating daily punch offering.
Worth ordering something to eat, too?Black Cat is a stellar bar that also happens to serve really, really good food. During their happy hour you can score a stellar burger with warm, funky raclette cheese, melted onions, and all the fixings on a potato bun for $9, as well as their signature crispy deviled eggs with white anchovy for just $6.
Did the staff do you right?Like any truly great neighborhood spot, bartenders are attentive, friendly, there when you need them, and gone when you don’t.
Wrap it up: what are we coming here for? This is one of the greatest spots for happy hour, especially if you’re able to secure some of the outdoor seating, where you can enjoy quality Silver Lake people watching from the sidewalk.
